How to spot a dark horse your league is sleeping on

The favourites are priced into everyone's bracket. The edge is in knowing which outsiders are actually built for a run.

Every league stacks the same top four or five teams at the business end of most brackets – which is exactly why picking them rarely wins anything. The players who finish top usually have one or two outsiders carrying real weight. The trick is telling a genuine dark horse from a hopeful punt.

The three traits that matter

A real dark horse isn't just "a team that might surprise." It's an outsider with three things stacking up at the same time:

  • A kind route – a path that doesn't run through three contenders back to back.
  • A settled core – the same spine playing together, not a side still figuring itself out.
  • Form that's arriving, not fading – peaking into the event rather than coasting in on reputation.
Rule of thumb

One trait is a hunch. Two is interesting. All three at once is the rare combination actually worth a knockout pick.

Find an outsider with all three and it's a calculated edge, not a wild swing. Pick one you genuinely believe in, commit, and ride it all the way – half-believing in a dark horse is worse than not picking one at all.

Put it into practice.
